Changbanpo

Overview. Changbanpo is a major "long-armour" (changkao) wusheng play on a Three Kingdoms theme, usually performed together with Hanjin Kou (about Guan Yu meeting the routed army at the river); the pair is called Changbanpo and Hanjin Kou, a martial classic of Three Kingdoms opera.

Synopsis. In 208 CE, Cao Cao's army advances south; Liu Bei retreats with the people and is scattered at Changbanpo. The general Zhao Yun (Zhao Zilong) charges alone into the encirclement, breaking in and out seven times, rescuing Lady Gan and Lady Mi and carrying Liu Bei's infant son Adou (Liu Shan) out of the siege. Lady Mi, to avoid burdening Zhao Yun, throws herself into a well; later Zhang Fei holds the bridge over the water at Changban, a single roar driving back Cao's troops, letting Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and the others escape.

Artistic Features. This is the touchstone of the changkao wusheng role (armour and back-flags), demanding "steadiness, accuracy, beauty", able to fight yet conveying Zhao Yun's loyal, valiant, and refined bearing. Masters Yang Xiaolou and Shang Heyu set the models in different styles. The "Lady Mi throwing herself into the well" (cloak-cover) and "fighting while holding the infant" are intricate yet clean highlights.

Why Watch. Changbanpo crystallizes Zhao Yun's "utterly fearless" image with equal weight on singing, recitation, acting, and combat, a representative of Three Kingdoms opera and the wusheng role, often paired with Hanjin Kou for the complete story.
