Yang Jingyu (Yang Jing Yu)

Overview. Peking Opera Yang Jingyu is a modern play on a modern revolutionary theme, based on the true deeds of General Yang Jingyu, a principal founder of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Army.
Synopsis. During the War of Resistance, Yang Jingyu leads the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Army in guerrilla warfare amid the white mountains and black rivers, tying down the Japanese army; in the desperate extreme of ice and snow, alone and out of food, he remains unyielding, and finally sacrifices heroically, his steadfastness of eating grass-roots and cotton wadding to fill his hunger shaking both enemy and friend. The play writes of a national hero's iron will.
Artistic Features. The play shapes Yang Jingyu with modern Peking Opera technique; snowy plains and forest scenes combined with the laosheng (or wusheng) robust singing and acting make it a solemn and stirring, weighty play among red-theme Peking Operas.
Why Watch. Raising a spiritual monument on the basis of a true national hero's deeds, Yang Jingyu is a representative play of Peking Opera modern theatre that promotes the spirit of the War of Resistance.
