Rickshaw Boy

Overview. Peking Opera Rickshaw Boy (Camel Xiangzi) is a modern play adapted from Lao She's novel of the same name, writing the tragic fate of the old-Beijing rickshaw puller Xiangzi's "three rises and three falls" — a realist powerhouse among modern Peking Operas.

Synopsis. The village youth Xiangzi comes to Beiping, determined to buy with his own labor a rickshaw of his own; yet he meets in succession the loss of his cart to soldiers, the cheating-away of his savings, and his wife's death in childbirth — three rises and three falls ending in the shattering of his dream. The play, through Xiangzi's struggle, writes how the old society "turned men into ghosts," bitter and gloomy.

Artistic Features. Rickshaw Boy shapes the underclass puller ensemble with modern Peking Opera technique; its arias are plain and vigorous, a solid adaptation of Lao She's masterpiece into Peking Opera.

Why Watch. Shaking the heart with Xiangzi's blood-and-tears fate, Rickshaw Boy is one of the modern Peking Operas that faces social suffering squarely and gives one pause for thought.
