What is Chinese opera called?

Chinese opera isn’t just one thing—it’s actually a broad category that includes many regional styles. The most famous and internationally recognized form is:

Peking Opera (京剧, Jīngjù) – Originating in Beijing in the late 18th century, it combines singing, speech, dance, and acrobatics. It features symbolic movements, painted face makeup, and elaborate costumes. The stories often come from Chinese history, folklore, or classical literature.

But there are many other forms of Chinese opera, such as:

• Kunqu Opera (昆曲) – One of the oldest forms, known for its graceful, refined style and poetic lyrics. It was listed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
