明朝吏部尚书李廷甫将女儿秀英许配翰林王裕之子玉林。秀英的表兄顾文友因求婚不成，便买通孙媒婆向秀英借得玉簪一支，连同伪造的情书，在秀英成婚之日，暗置于新房之中，玉林你以为中计，疑秀英不贞，备加冷落和凌辱京剧。廷甫闻女被虐，赶往王府责问，玉林方出示情书、玉簪，遂使真相大白京剧文化。然秀英已被折磨成疾。玉林悔恨不已，上京赴考中魁，请来凤冠霞帔向秀英认错赔礼。
