Yao Qi (Yao Qi)

Overview. Yao Qi (also called Grass Bridge Pass, or Yao Gang's Trouble) is an Eastern Han-themed jing (painted-face) play about the loyalty, troubles, and bond between the founding general Yao Qi and his son Yao Gang.
Synopsis. In the Eastern Han, the founding meritorious official Yao Qi guards Grass Bridge Pass; his son Yao Gang, in a fit of anger, beats a powerful noble to death. Yao Qi binds his son and goes to the court to plead guilty; Emperor Guangwu (Liu Xiu), mindful of Yao Qi's service, does not punish him severely. The play depicts the old minister's prudent integrity and the father-son affection.
Artistic Features. Yao Qi is played by the jing role (tongchui hualian), with vigorous, resonant singing; scenes like binding the son and going to court shape the old minister's backbone through steady erhuang melody, a representative painted-face play.
Why Watch. Yao Qi voices the honour and disgrace of a founding veteran through the solemn singing of the painted face, a frequently performed classic of the jing (hualian) repertoire.
