Origin & Development

Peking Opera originated in Beijing in the late 18th century, evolving from Anhui Opera and Han Opera while absorbing elements from Kunqu Opera, Qinqiang Opera, and other forms. The visit of the Four Great Anhui Troupes to Beijing during the Qianlong Emperor's reign laid the foundation for its development.

Four Major Roles

Peking Opera roles are divided into four main categories, each with detailed subdivisions, forming a complete character system.
