A first-timer's guide to the conventions
The first thing to know: Peking Opera is convention, not imitation. A circle with a whip means riding; a walk in place means a long journey. Relax into the stylisation and the poetry appears.
The jīnghú (京胡) — a high, bright two-string fiddle — leads a small ensemble with clappers and drums. The percussion is not background: it cues entrances, fights and emotions. Let the rhythm guide you even when you miss a word.
Most plays are famous stories. A programme synopsis (or subtitles at major theatres) is enough; the rest is acting, song and spectacle you can feel. Watch the eyes, the sleeves and the face.
Beijing's Chang'an Grand Theatre and the Zhengyici Hutong Theatre, Shanghai's Yifu Theatre and touring troupes worldwide all stage the classics. Arrive a little early, enjoy the overture, and let two centuries of craft wash over you.
